PRESENTATION OF THE CULTIVARS Recent additions are marked in gold We recommend www.aloesplus.com as nice specialist's site. |
| acutissima
'Antaramorensis' - thinner in habit, leaves thinner, richly colored in
shades of turquose, blue-green, orange, yellow, and purple. A more
richly colored clone. It has been listed as a botanical variety but may
be a single clone. The jury is out on this taxon and your alternative
opinions are welcome. acutissima [orange-leaved form] - a clone with blades mostly orange in full sun, yellowish-green at the very base. 'Agdal' - a complex hybrid involving at least 5 species. 'Alba' (calcairophylla x albiflora) - an old white-flowered hybrid, not widely seen today 'Andrea' (camperi x striata) - leaves dichotomous, 70-100cm long x 25-30cm wide, concave, bluish, margins reddish, teeth 1cm apart. Nice dense coral-red flowers. arborescens 'Blue-leaved' - more glaucous than species typical. A good clone of this should be named. arborescens [early flowering] - earlier season bloom than species typical. arborescens 'Frutescens' - this epithet means "becoming shrub-like or shrubby" and has been considered a botanical variety too. Probably just a denser, bushier, more branching clone. arborescens [orange-flowered] - two different clones are offered by Paul Forsters of Queensland. arborescens 'Philip de Roux' - a clone with yellow flowers arborescens 'Spineless' - lacking marginal spines. Based on Graf's Exotica. He was told by Harry Hall that this may be a hybrid to A. striata. arborescens 'Variegata' - banded cream and gold, usually a subtle variegate compared to some others as the base color is pale blue-green. Chimera amounts do vary. arborescens [yellow-flowered] - a listed name from the UK, species is often vermillion to orange flowered but yellow forms are reported in gardens. 'Philip de Roux' and 'Yellow Torch' are named clones of this same trait. arborescens 'Yellow Torch' - 6-8 ft. tall in flower, yellow Kniphofia-like inflorescences, leaves shorter and less recurved than A. arborescens so it could be a hybrid. Cold hardy to 22 deg. F. Grown in California for some years. Offered in 2006 by www.smgrowers.com and doubtless their many retail clients. aristata 'Variegata' - rosette 15cm wide, green striped white, spines more whitish. Shown and described in Graf's Exotica. 'Baby Blue' - a listed name from collections 'Baby Grand' - a Bleck hybrid of complex parentage. 'Badeel' (descoingsii x deltoideodenta) - David Cummings hybrid. bakeri 'Concolor' - apparently a more concolorous form. 'Bella Bella' (A. rauhii x albiflora x bellatula) - a highly marked leaf. 'Bella Bowe' (rauhii, albiflora, bellatula mix) 'Bella Vamp' - ((bellatula x bakeri) x vaombe)) 'Benvenue' (jucunda x jacksonii) - David Cummings cross. 'Bill Morris' - ((juacunda x bakeri)x somaliensis) - named for it's creator. 'Black Beauty' - rough, narrow nearly black leaves, pretty coral flowers. A. rauhii x A. parvula. 'Black Elf' - a listed name 'Black Gem' - a listed name. There is a 'Black Gem' clone that is a cross of Haworthia cymbiflormis x Aloe speciosa. 'Blackdown' (dentoideodenta x bellatula) - David Cummings creation. 'Blimey Limey' - leaves mottled silver, most notable for flowers a pale lime green, more whitish-green. Distributed by the ISI. Bred by Bleck. 'Blue Blazer' (A. striata x A. maculata (saponaria)) - 30 in tall in flower, flowers orangish-salmon, leaves bluish-green, intermediate between parents. Source: www.yuccado.com 'Blue Boy' (pratensis x humilis) - a listed name.Blue Elf' - clustering, leaved narrow, blue tinged pink. from Hummel. It is grown outdoors in the SW US as floriferous and colorful landscape plant. 'Blue Lady' ((albida x albiflora x antondroi) - a Cummings production in nice blue shades. 'Blue Mist' - a listed name 'Blue Moon' (deltoideodenta x leata x rauhii) - dark blue leaves with white dots. 'Blue Sensation' - a listed name. 'Blue Swirl' - Bill Morris hybrid. 'Boomslang' (cameronii x ?) 'Borris' - a listed name, not likely in the moderm trade. 'Bortiana' (striata x ?) - dense rosettes, leaves 25cm long x 7-8cm wide, stiff, bluish, well-mottled, margins dentate, flowers much as A. striata. A garden hybrid and thus a good cultivar. 'Bountiful' (albiflora x thompsonii) - A G.D. Rowley hybrid 'Brass Hat' - small, slowish rosettes, leaves are dark bronze-green (a brassy look), well-toothed, red tinged at times, yellowish-orange flower. Bleck hybrid. brevifolia 'Variegata' - leaves striped yellow. Shown and described in Graf's Exotica. 'Bromley' - a Cummings hybrid. 'Burnished Bronze' (deltoideodenta x ?) - leaves reddish-bronze with faint spottings, new growth green at first. 'Calcahaw' (calcairophila x haworthoides) - Bleck hybrid. 'Crosby's Prolific' - blue-green, vigorous, many teeth and puckers, A. nobilis x A. humilis var. echinata. I have grown this indoor under lights for years. It is a pretty plant and very durable giving almost no water for 60-90 days at a time. 'Dapple Gri' - a miniature A. rauhii hybrid 'Dainty' - A. haworthoides x ? from David Cummings, possibily involving A. descoingsii. 'Dainty's Daughter' - probably a Cummings variant on 'Dainty' - not sure. 'Dark Beauty' - a listed name. 'Dazzler' (laeta x deltoideodenta) - leaves greyish-green with white bandings and markings over 90% or more of the leaf. It is one of the most ornately colored clones known. deltoideodonta 'Wunderkind' - dwarf to small rosettes, offsetting strongly (unlike parent species), leaves medium green mottled silver to 90%, marginal teeth often fused into "molar-like groupings", inflorescence with greysih-green stems and rose-orange flowers. A hybrid of the species by Brian Kemble from a failed cross to A. somaliensis var. marmorata (apparently a species selfing). It was offered by Huntington under ISI 2004-16 for the first time. 'Delaine' (descoingsii x ?) - a small David Cummings hybrid. 'Deleuilii (abyssinica x ferox) - rosettes large to 2.5m wide, dense, very leaf, leaves bluish with red to purple margins, very concave, triangular marginal teeth. Large red inflor. It is not A. nobilis, the so-called "gold tooth aloe". 'Doran Black' ('Dorian Black') - dark green, tuburculate leaves, an R. Wright hybrid, the silver zones contrasting well. The base color is far darker than 'Lizard Lips' among others. It is one of the most widely available hybrids on the market. 'Dunnet' - Paul Forster hybrid. 'Dwayne' - small, neat clusters eru Green Group ('Green Form' invalid) - leaves greener, more faintly maculate. eru 'Maculata' - leaves smaller, narrower, bluish-green, more heavily marked in cream 'Estrella del Mar' (humilis x maculata (saponaria)) - star-like clumps, leaves to 1 inch wide, finely sized marginal teeth, flowers orange and tubular with yellowish to green tips. Introduced from Jeff Anderson of Las Cruces, NM USA. Offered by www.yuccado.com since 2006. 'Fang' (dorotheae x striata?) - small rosettes, leaves light green with reddish-brown markings. Notable for teeth strong and highly curled, curled and fang-like at times. 'Fieta' - a Bleck hyrbid 'Fire Bird' - a listed name. Description needed. 'Firefly' = an x Gasteraloe hybrid 'Fleury' - flowers very showy, yellow with nice contrasting red tips. 'Flurry' - a listed name. Probably an error for 'Fleury' 'Gigantea' (vera x ferox) - a garden hybrid with rosettes to 1.5m wide, very dense, leaves 75cm long x 12-15cm wide, concave, bluish-green, margins more reddish, sharp teeth. Inflorescence large, flowers yellow to about 30mm long. 'Golden Axis' NEW NAME (A. 'Picta' in part, 'Picta Variegated' in part, not A. picta) - The name 'Picta' as a cultivar is clearly a nomen confusum with A. picta and must be rejected in my opinion. The true, highly mottled clone is a wonderful variegated plant derived from A. maculata aka saponaria with up to 70% (see photo above) chimera. It is a plant larger than what we believe to be the original A. maculata 'Variegata' (aka A. saponaria 'Variegata'), differing in 1) rosettes to 12 inches or wider, 2) blades to 1.2 inches wide, and 3) marginal teeth a dark golden brown. It is thought to be a variegated sport of a cross of A. maculata (saponaria) x A. picta or perhaps even A. striata x A. picta. The hybrid of A. maculata (saponaria) x A. striata has long been common in CA gardens and this may be a mutant from it (per Graf's Exotica). Under the invalid, confusing name 'Picta', the chimera may be reduced in some rosettes (common in variegated Aloe offsets) and as low as 15% of the surface. For purposes of defining this new name 'Golden Axis', the chimera must be at least 45% of the surface to retain the qualities desired. If it is A. maculata x striata then the hybrid 'Blue Blazer' and 'Schimperi' may be the parent clones - DNA tests would prove this. The photo of the original 'Picta' in Graf's Exotica shows perhaps 20-30% surface chimera. To that low chimera version I give no name (as it has no ornamental value) and consider only something with 45% color chimera to be assignable to 'Golden Axis'. Not also that Graf's photo show no clear, uniform margination on any leaf, while 'Golden Axis' has some if not most leaves with a strong, pure yellow margin. 'Grande' - a Bleck hybrid 'Green Gold' - cream marked, a Hummel selection 'Green Jaws' - A. madescasca x A. laeta, nice toothy rosettes 'Green Shark' - David Cummings hybrid. Grim Hybrids Group - a group of plants from R. Grim, San Jose, CA USA 'Heedad' - David Cummings hybrid. 'Helen Negey' - a listed name 'Hey Babe' - miniature, very free flowering, an A. rauhii hybrid from Bleck. humilis 'Globosa' - small rounded rosettes, blue-green, more dense foliage, purplish tips, popular.Sold as "Spider aloe" 'Humvir' (humilis x virens) - small rosette, offsetting freely, leaves very narrow, needle-like bright green, dotted lighter green, weak small marginal teeth, only 5cm long. California origin. 'Jade Temple' - pagoda-like form, leaves dark green and marked white similar to A. variegata, blades recurved. 'Jason' - David Cummings hybrid. 'Jelena' - David Cummings hybrid. 'Johnson's Hybrid' - a listed name 'Kid's Candy' - narrow, toothy leaf 'La Mortola' (syn. A. x laetococcinea hort.) - dense rosette, leaves 20cm long x 5cm wide, convex, bluish-green, numerous irregular white marks, margins with pinks teeth to 5mm long, flowers red with green tips. A garden hybrid of unkown parentage, known from the Italian Riviera. 'Liberty Bell' - a good hybrid from Santa Barbara Univ. 'Lavender Beauty' - a listed name 'Lime Delight' - David Cummings cross. 'Link' - David Cummings creation. 'Little One' - another good Cummings hybrid. 'Little Porker' - a listed name 'LIttle Three' - from David Cummings 'Lizard Lips' - 8-12 in. wide or more. mottled white to 50%, red tips, a very pretty A. rauhii hybrid from John Bleck, CA USA. Popular for both it's beauty and fun name. There is a nice "bonsaied" example shown in the photo above. It will cluster and stay small if roots are restricted. 'Lysa' (bakeri x variegata) - David Cummings hybrid. 'Macho Pink' - a Bleck hybrid maculata 'Eastern Free State' ("eastern form") - a variant of the species from the eastern part of the native range, usually more highly mottled, inflorescence not flat-topped, flowers more orangish-red (variable from yellow to sunset to orange in species typical), and a slightly better cold hardiness. maculata (saponaria) [yellow-flowered form] - flowers yellow and not orange as species typical. In California this is traced to Ruth Bancroft, Walnut Creek, CA. Offered by www.smgrowers.com as a wholesale offering in 2006. maculata 'Variegata' (saponaria 'Variegata) - striped white to cream to various amounts, variable in the trade with less marked rosettes sold for what must be purely economic reasons. See 'Golden Axis' for a clone confused with it. From 'Golden Axis', this taxon differs mainly in smaller rosettes (under 10 inches wide), less chimera (as low as 15% surface), and most importantly cream to light green marginal teeth (rarely golden or never brown). 'Madora' - a David Cummings production. 'Midnight' - a Bleck hybrid 'Milky White' - very white, A. sinkatina x A. krapohliana var. dumoulinii 'Minibelle' - dwarf, bright medium green, marked about 30% in lighter green zones, marginal teeth very large but not hard. See photo above. nobilis 'Silver Stripes' - bright cream to white stripes and margins nobilis 'Variegata' or variegated form - striped cream to white at 15-50%, chimera varying. I cannot say the typical offerings in the trade and eBay are 'Silver Stripes' or not. Plants sold on eBay in 2006 seems to be mostly 35-50% creamy-white. Less boldly marked phases are out there so buyer beware and insist on "actual plant you will receive" listings. nobilis [white-toothed clone] - a clonal variant with white instead of yellow to golden marginal teeth. 'Ole' - a Bleck hybrid 'Olympic Star' - a Bleck hybrid 'Oslo' (bakeri x bowleia) 'Pagoda' (dinteri x variegata) 'Park Avenue' - vigorous, clumping, bright light green with rough surface, soft teeth, and a very tall, narrow leaf. Thought to be a Hummel creation. 'Parjay' (descoingsii x parvula) - Cummings hybrid parvula [spiny form] - more heavily toothed, very showy 'Peacock' - marked lime green, a Bleck hybrid 'Pepe' - compact, soft white spines, like a greener A. hawothoides which it came from crossed to A. descoungsii. J. Bleck hybrid 'Petite' (albida x bellatula) - a small hybrid 'Petra Star' (rauhii x niehburiana) 'Picta' or 'Picta Variegated' (maculata x ?) = 'Golden Axis' 'Pink Lace' = x Gasteraloe hybrid by some accounts, belongs here by others. Leaves purplish, even pinkish, highly flecked white, marginal teeth pink. Flowers campanulate and pink. 'Pink Perfection' (bakeri x antandroi) - large rosettes, clumps well, very showy pink flowers. Intro. by Huntington Bot. Gard. 'Pink Sensation' (bakeri x antandroi) - David Cummings cross. 'Prime Time' - a Bleck hybrid 'Prince Gata (prinslooi x variegata) - a listed name. 'Prince Rocco' (rauhii x prinslooi) 'Purple Beauty' - a listed name. 'Purple Delight' - a David Cummings product. 'Purple Dream' (parvula x ?) - another Cummings hybrid. 'Purple Shark' - David Cummings cross. 'Quick Silver' ('Quicksilver') - a rich silver cross from Bleck using A. rauhii. It is nearly 98% silvery-white in the best phases. 'Riccobono' (arborescens x capitata) - Jacobsen says this hybrid originates with the Botanical Garden of Palermo, Italy in 1912. 'Robertii' - rosettes to 2m wide, leaves 70-80cm long x 15-20cm wide, bluish-green, marginal teeth brown and spaced 2cm apparent. Many yellow flowers. A garden hybrid. 'Rooikappie' (sinkatena x ?) saponaria = maculata 'Scabra' (bellatula x albiflora) - an old hyrid from C.F. Innes. 'Schimperi' (maculata (saponaria) x striata) - leaves flat below, bluish-green, faintly striped, small irregular marginal teeth, inflor. to 1m tall, flowers tubular, red. An old garden hybrid. 'Silver Cloud' (parvula x rauhii x ?) - Cummings hybrid. 'Silver Stripes' = nobilis 'Silver Stripes' 'Snow Queen' - leaves tinged purplish to pink, teeth pinkish. It is actually named not for leaf color but the blush to near white flowers seen in abundance outdoors. 'Snow Storm' (deltoideodenta x leata) - leaves dark green with large white spots on both sides. 'Snowflake' - a Bleck hybriid of A. rauhii that is very heavily marked (65-85%) in silvery-white. 'Soldad' - a listed name. Description needed. somaliensis 'Kew Green' - a paler, more green clone from the famous Kew Gardens. 'Southern Star' - A. bowiae x A. pictifolia, Etwin Aslander hybrid 'Sparking Burgundy' - rosettes recurving, growth slower than most hybrids, rich dark red to reddish-violet tints, marginal teeth reddish. From J. Bleck. 'Speciosa' (NOT A. speciosa Bak.) - probably a cross of A. heteracantha with 18-20cm x 8cm wide leaves, green with some white spots, more highly spotted below, margins with 2mm teeth. Large red flowers. This is clearly a nomen confusum since a valid species is named Aloe speciosa Bak. Were it a more important plant and known in the trade today, a rename is in order. 'Spinosissima' (humilis x arborescens var. pachythrysa) - many-stemmed, 1m tall or more, leaves in spiralled rosette, sometimes spidar-like, 25-30cm long x 3-4cm wide, very concave above, teeth large to 8mm long, spotted below. Inflor. dense to 60cm, flowers very showy bright scarlet to orange. It is a garden hybrid from La Mortola, Italy on the Riveriera. It is not the clone 'La Mortola'. deGraf calls it the "Torch aloe" 'Spiral' (pluridens x mutabilis) - a listed name. 'Splash' (variegata x ?) - actually not spotted or splashed but more suffused brownish to purple. 'Spotted Star' - a showy complex cross of four species. 'Spuria' - rosettes dense, clumping, leaves 10-12 per rosette, 30-45cm long x 5-7cm wide, green to tinged red, often pinkish below, faintly lined and banded, marginal teeth 3-4mm long. Inflor. to 1.2m with light red flowers of 2cm length. It is another cross from the Italian Riviera at La Mortola. 'Surprise' (ferox x millotii) - a Cummings hybrid. Description needed. 'Tegelberg's Triumph' - thought to be A. aristata x A. erinacea, having rich red tints 'Tiny Gem' (descoingsii x slandeniana) - a dwarf hybrid, must be wonderful with such good parents. 'Tom Jack' (jacksonii x thompsoniae) 'Tom Wan-ro' ((rauhii x 'Walmsley's Bronze') x thompsoniae)) - such hybrid names based on the parentage should be avoided. 'Tonto' - Bill Baker hybrid variegata 'Hummel's Petite' - more upright, thinner, refined leaf. Hummel intro. variegata 'Splash' - no spots, brownish-purple tints 'Versad' (variegata x descoingsii) - a Cummings hybrid 'Walmsley's Blue' - vigorous, clumping, a wonderful chalky blue-green, dense over time. Very popular. 'Walmsley's Bronze' - dense clumps, nice bronze to copper tints in full light. Very popular indoors and out. 'White Cloud' - wide, dark green leaves with numerous whitish-green flecks 'White Diamond' - dwarf to small rosettes, clumping over time, leaves green with abundant white dot and markings, resembling a pile of glittering diamonds on it. 'White Tooth' - a clone offered by www.tytyga.com. I have not seen it but it resembles the white-toothed form of A. nobilis. It should be studied to be sure. 'Winter Sky' - a nicely marked A. rauhii hybrid, probably with A. descongsii in the mix. From S. Lyons. 'Wonder' - small rosettes, leaves short and wide, very light green, with slightly lighter tubercles, a very subtle but refined effect. 'Wunderkind' (deltoideodenata x somaliensis var. marmorata) 'Zebra Star' - heavily spotted and marked white, derived from A. deltoideodonta 'Variegata' x A. laetea 'Zygo' - David Cummings hybrid. |
