Campsis grandiflora 'Morning Calm' makes the familar Campsis radicans look like a primative, boring, rampant weed and no longer the best representative of the genus in our minds. Even the grand, lovely 'Mme. Galen' is tiresome and ignorable around this new glorious lady. This J.C. Raulston clonal selection is a delicate, apricot orange in the throat, veined darker orange-red. The large, round, wide corolla lobes are glowing with hues of coral, vermilion, and bright orange depending on the time of day and age of the flower. There is just the right balance of radiance and nuance.
For all this intricate coloration 'Morning Calm' presents a bold, luminous, uniform effect from 15 feet or more. Unfortunately this lovely Asian is not as cold hardy as our native (USDA 4 vs.6) so not all of us will have more pleasure than a photo. The name reflects the renewing glow of a sunrise or just the mood of a leisurely stroll to her in the morning dew. And in my experience the early morning colors shine the best.
